Quick Answer

An Irish licence holder can drive in Costa Rica without an IDP — the licence alone is fine for a tourist stay. The catch is that you switch from left- to right-hand driving, on top of narrow mountain roads and one-lane bridges. The alcohol limit (0.05) matches home.

Costa Rica is a brilliant self-drive destination, and for an Irish visitor the documents are refreshingly simple. The part that actually demands attention is the one you carry from home with you: years of driving on the left.

Can an Irish licence holder drive in Costa Rica?

Yes — and you do not need an International Driving Permit. Your Irish licence is accepted on its own for a tourist stay; just keep your passport with it. So the licence box, which often causes the most pre-trip anxiety, is ticked easily here.

The side switch is the real adjustment

Ireland drives on the left; Costa Rica drives on the right. This is a genuine left-to-right switch, and the danger window is your first day — pulling out of a fuel station, joining a junction, or that reflex glance the wrong way. Combine that with Costa Rica’s terrain and it pays to be deliberate: take the first hour on quiet roads, not in San José traffic, and talk yourself through every turn until staying right feels automatic.

Mountain roads, potholes and one-lane bridges

This is where Costa Rica differs most from an Irish road trip. Routes to the coast and the cloud forests are narrow, steep and prone to potholes, with frequent single-lane bridges where you give way to oncoming traffic. Many roads to beaches are unpaved and cross shallow rivers, so a 4x4 is the sensible rental. Journeys take longer than the distance suggests, and you will rarely use the top end of the speed limits.

Speeds are low to match: 40 km/h in towns, 60 rural, 100 on the few faster stretches. The alcohol limit is 0.05, the same as Ireland, but enforced firmly. A speeding fine for roughly 10 km/h over is CRC 53,000 (≈ EUR 95). Emergencies are 911; fuel is near $1.28/litre.

See the Costa Rica driving guide for the full rules, confirm there’s no permit needed with the Driving Permit Checker, and estimate a fine with the Speeding Fine Calculator.
