Can an American Drive in the Cook Islands? — Yes, but You Switch to the Left

The Cook Islands are tiny, relaxed and made for a slow loop of the coast road — Rarotonga’s main ring is barely 32 km around. For an American visitor the driving is gentle, but there is one genuine catch, and it is not the licence.

The verdict: yes, with an IDP in your pocket

You can drive here on your US licence, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry with it. Rental operators generally want to see the IDP, and some visitors are directed to the police station in Avarua to pick up a local visitor’s driving permit before they set off — ask the hire company what applies to your booking. Sort the IDP at home through AAA; you cannot get one once you arrive.

The one real adjustment: you drive on the left

This is the fact to fix in your head before you turn the key. The Cook Islands drive on the left, the opposite of the United States. Everything your instincts expect — which way to look at a junction, which lane to drift into, which hand reaches for the gearstick — is mirrored. The danger window is the first hour: pulling out of the rental yard, joining the ring road, glancing the wrong way at an intersection.
