Can an American Drive in Colombia? — Yes, IDP Recommended + a 0.02 Limit

Colombia rewards a self-drive trip — the coffee region, the Caribbean coast, the climb to Bogotá — and for an American the rules are easy to get right with a little preparation.

The verdict for US licence holders

You can drive in Colombia on your American licence, with an International Driving Permit recommended to carry with it. The IDP isn’t always demanded, but Colombian rental companies and police prefer to see one, and it heads off any dispute over your paperwork. Your US licence covers short visits; arrange the IDP at home, and keep your licence, IDP and passport together. Helpfully, Colombia drives on the right, the same as the US, so there’s no side switch to relearn.

The number that surprises Americans: a 0.02 alcohol limit

Colombia’s drink-drive limit is a near-zero 0.02, dramatically tighter than the 0.08 used across most of the US. This is effectively a no-alcohol rule for drivers, enforcement is taken seriously, and the penalties are severe. If you are getting behind the wheel, skip the drink entirely.

Speeds, fines and the mountains

Limits run 60 km/h in town, 80 on rural roads and 120 on motorways. A speeding penalty typically lands around COP 416,000 (roughly €95), with cameras on the main highways and through Bogotá, so it pays to watch the signs. The driving itself rates as moderate rather than easy: mountain roads are winding and slow, surface quality varies away from the toll routes, and city traffic — Bogotá especially — is dense and assertive.

Fuel is around $0.68 a litre, and the emergency number across the country is 123, not the 911 you dial at home — worth saving before you set off.
