Quick Answer

Yes — an Indian licence holder can drive in Colombia with an International Driving Permit recommended alongside it. Two things genuinely catch Indian drivers: switching from left- to right-hand traffic, and a near-zero 0.02 alcohol limit that is even tighter than India's 0.03.

Colombia rewards a self-drive — the coffee region, the Caribbean coast and the Andes are all far easier with your own car. For an Indian driver the paperwork is the simple part; two specific adjustments are what matter.

The verdict for Indian licence holders

You can drive in Colombia on your Indian licence, with an International Driving Permit recommended to carry alongside it. Rental desks and police expect to see the IDP, so arrange it in India before you fly — you cannot get one once you arrive. Your licence is generally valid for stays of up to three months, which covers most trips. Keep the IDP, licence and passport together.

The biggest adjustment: switching to the right

India drives on the left; Colombia drives on the right. This is the change most likely to catch you out, and the danger window is your first day — pulling out of a fuel station, joining a roundabout that now flows the other way, or glancing the wrong direction at a junction. Spend your first hour on quiet roads, well away from Bogotá’s traffic, and be deliberate at every turn until “wrong” stops feeling like the right way.

A near-zero alcohol limit and mountain roads

Colombia’s blood-alcohol limit is 0.02 — effectively zero, and tighter than India’s 0.03. There is no margin for a single drink; if you are driving, don’t. A typical fixed penalty for a speeding lapse runs around COP 416,000 (≈ €95). Beyond the law, the road itself is the bigger teacher: many routes are mountain roads with variable surfaces, blind bends and limited guardrails, and altitude can sap an underpowered hire car. Posted limits are 60 km/h urban, 80 rural, 120 on the motorway, but drive to the bend, not the sign. Fuel is around $0.68/litre and the emergency number is 123.

Yes. Your Indian licence is valid for tourist driving, with an International Driving Permit recommended to carry with it. The licence is typically good for stays of up to three months.

Check if your licence is valid

Colombia drives on the right, while India drives on the left — so this is a genuine side switch. Take your first hour on quiet roads before tackling Bogotá traffic.

It is 0.02 BAC — effectively near-zero and stricter than India's 0.03. Treat it as no alcohol at all; penalties are steep and enforcement is real in the cities.
