China on a US Licence 2026: Neither It Nor the AAA IDP Works

No. China does not accept a US licence or an IDP, and Canada's advice says a Chinese licence needs a foreigner residence permit. There is no road route from the US either, so short-stay visitors fly in and hire a car with a driver.
Americans cannot drive in mainland China on a US licence, and the international permit sold through AAA does not fix that. China accepts neither foreign nor international licences. Getting a Chinese one requires a foreigner residence permit, which puts it out of reach for a vacation. And for anyone wondering about driving there from the US: there is no road connection across the Pacific, so every trip starts with a flight, and once you land the licence rule applies in full.
The AAA permit is the wrong tool for China
An International Driving Permit is a translation booklet backed by a treaty. It works only where the destination signed one of the two road traffic conventions, from 1949 or 1968. The United States joined the 1949 convention, which is why AAA can issue the permit. China joined neither. So the booklet has nothing to attach to there. Canada’s travel advice says flatly that foreign and international driving licences are not recognised in China, and the UK’s advice says a Chinese licence and valid insurance are mandatory, with fines and detention for anyone caught without them.

A Chinese licence follows residence, not a tourist visa
Canada’s advice describes the only formal path: hold a foreigner residence permit and meet local requirements, then apply for a Chinese licence. That suits Americans posted to China for work or study. It does not fit a two-week trip.
Some rental firms or agencies say they can sort out a permit for visitors anyway. Neither the Canadian nor the UK advice describes such an option for tourists. If you are offered one, have the company put in writing what document you will receive and what insurance covers you before you hand over money.
How Americans get around instead
- A car and driver, booked by the day, is the usual way to reach places off the rail network.
- High-speed rail handles long hops between cities. You must show your passport to buy a ticket and again to board, per GOV.UK.
- Taxis and ride-hailing cover the cities. Use marked, metered cars and keep the receipt.
Same side of the road, much tighter margins
China drives on the right, just like the US, which is the one thing that will feel familiar from the passenger seat. Almost everything else is stricter.

US limits vary by state; the figures above are the usual ranges. China’s come from the WHO country profile. Expressways are the closest match, with 120 km/h sitting at the top of a typical interstate range. Towns are where an American eye misjudges: a sign reading 50 looks like a highway number, yet it means barely 31 mph.
Why the accident rules matter even to passengers
Canada warns that a driver suspected of causing an accident can be detained until the case is closed, which can take years, and that a licence can be confiscated on the spot for drink-driving. GOV.UK adds that, after a serious accident, the vehicle should stay where it is until the police arrive, and that the people involved may be held legally responsible for an injured person’s medical costs. A driver who hits a pedestrian is held responsible. For a visitor, those are strong reasons to let a local professional drive and to stay with them if something happens.
