Quick Answer

An American licence holder can drive in Chile on the same right-hand traffic as home. Carry an IDP with it, and pay close attention to the alcohol limit — Chile's 0.03 is far stricter than the US 0.08.

What Tourists Miss

Americans driving in Chile face a 0.03 BAC limit — less than half the US 0.08 — and an IDP is strongly recommended because police stops escalate without one.

Chile is a popular self-drive trip for American visitors, and for good reason — the traffic side matches home, the spine of the country is a fast, well-built highway, and your licence is accepted. The two things most likely to catch you out are the alcohol limit and the sheer scale of the desert north.

Can an American licence holder drive in Chile?

Yes. You can drive in Chile on your US state licence as a tourist, and an International Driving Permit is strongly recommended. It is not always required at the rental desk, but a stop by the Carabineros (traffic police) is far smoother when you hand over an IDP, your US licence and passport together. Get the IDP from AAA before you fly — you cannot obtain one inside Chile.

No side switch — but the alcohol limit is the trap

You keep driving on the right, so there is nothing to relearn there. The real difference is alcohol: Chile’s limit is 0.03, less than half the common US 0.08. The “one drink is fine” instinct from home does not translate — plan to drive or drink, never both. Penalties are severe and enforcement is active, particularly on weekend nights and near towns.

Big distances and the Atacama north

The motorway limit is 120 km/h, rural roads 100 and towns 60 — note that urban 60 is higher than many US city limits, but the towns themselves are dense. The Pan-American highway runs the length of the country and is the fast option, but the Atacama desert in the north has long gaps between fuel, signal and water. Refuel early, carry water, and download offline maps. Santiago has the heaviest, most assertive traffic you will meet.

A ticket of around 10 km/h over runs to CLP 38,000-70,000 (≈ EUR 65-130). Dial 131 for an ambulance; fuel is near $1.35/litre, so the long desert hauls add up.
