Quick Answer

Indian licence holders can drive in Chile for 90 days with an International Driving Permit recommended. The first real change is switching from left- to right-hand traffic; the second is the country's range — empty Atacama highway one day, dense Santiago traffic the next. The alcohol limit is a strict 0.03, the same as India.

Chile is a long, thin country that rewards a car like few places do — the Pan-American Highway runs its full spine, and the desert north, lake district and Patagonian south are all road trips in their own right. For an Indian driver the paperwork is light; the adjustments are about the road, not the licence.

You’re switching to the right

India drives on the left; Chile drives on the right, and this reversal is the thing most likely to catch you on day one. The risk isn’t the open highway — it’s the reflexes: pulling out of a fuel stop, taking a roundabout that now flows the other way, or the instinctive glance in the wrong direction at a junction. Spend your first hour on quiet roads rather than central Santiago, and check every turn deliberately until right-hand traffic stops feeling backwards.

Two countries in one drive

Chile’s roads swing between extremes. The Pan-American is excellent and fast, but in the Atacama you can go a long stretch with no fuel, no signal and fierce sun — plan stops and carry water. Then Santiago throws dense, assertive city traffic at you. Treat them as two different driving modes. Your Indian licence is valid for 90 days, and an IDP is recommended so the desk and police have a readable translation; sort it before you fly. Confirm the requirement on our driving permit checker.

Speeds, alcohol and the fine

Limits are 120 km/h on motorways, 100 rural, 60 urban. The alcohol limit is a strict 0.03, identical to India’s — there’s no margin, so don’t drink and drive. Speeding around 10 km/h over costs roughly CLP 38,000-70,000 (about EUR 35-65); you can estimate it with our speeding fine calculator.

Petrol is about $1.35/litre, the emergency number is 131, and the full rules sit on our Chile driving guide. Carry your IDP, Indian licence and passport, plus a warning triangle, vest, first-aid kit and extinguisher.
