Quick Answer

Brazil and Chile both drive on the right, so there is no side switch for a Brazilian — but if you're driving across the border you face the Andes. The Los Libertadores pass over the Cristo Redentor route climbs above 3,000 m with switchbacks and winter chain requirements. An IDP is recommended, and Chile's 0.03 alcohol limit, while looser than Brazil's near-zero, still bites at checkpoints.

For a Brazilian, the reassuring part of driving in Chile is what doesn’t change: both countries keep right, so there’s no mirror-image relearning, and the road signage will feel broadly familiar. The story of this corridor is geography. If you’re driving rather than flying in, the Andes stand between you and Chile, and that mountain crossing — not the paperwork — is what defines the trip.

The Andes crossing is the main event

The classic overland route from Mendoza into Santiago runs over the Paso Los Libertadores, past the Cristo Redentor, climbing above 3,000 metres through a dramatic stack of switchbacks (the Caracoles) near the summit. It’s spectacular and entirely driveable in summer, but it demands respect: thin air saps engine power, the descent is hard on brakes, and in winter snow chains are routinely mandatory and the pass can shut for days when storms roll in. Check the border and weather status before you commit to a crossing day, and never start a high pass with a near-empty tank. Chile’s situational winter-tyre and chain rules apply on southern and Andean routes too.

Paperwork: licence accepted, IDP smooths the edges

Your Brazilian licence is valid for tourist stays of up to 90 days, and an International Driving Permit is recommended rather than strictly required. Where it earns its keep is at the Andes border post and the frequent Carabineros checkpoints — a certified translation alongside your licence keeps a stop short. Sort it in Brazil before you travel and confirm the detail on the Driving Permit Checker.

Speeds, alcohol and the equipment Chile insists on

Chilean motorways run to 120 km/h, rural roads 100 and towns 60 — fractionally faster than Brazilian limits, and enforced by camera and patrol. The alcohol limit is 0.03, looser than Brazil’s near-zero stance, but Chilean controles are common and the penalty above 0.08 is severe, so don’t read the higher number as permission. Chile legally requires a warning triangle, reflective vest, first-aid kit and fire extinguisher in the car — check a rental has all four before you drive off.

Petrol runs around $1.35/litre, and Chile’s emergency numbers differ from Brazil’s: 131 for ambulance, 132 fire, 133 police. Full speed tables and regional notes are on the Chile driving guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

An IDP is recommended and smooths rental pickups and police stops, even though a Brazilian licence is accepted for tourist stays of up to 90 days. Carry it with the original licence and your passport, especially if crossing the Andes border.

Check if your licence is valid

The main Los Libertadores crossing climbs above 3,000 m with a long series of switchbacks near the summit. In winter, snow chains are often mandatory and the pass can close entirely for weather; check conditions before setting out.

0.03 BAC for a standard offence, with stiffer penalties above 0.08. That is looser than Brazil's effectively zero limit, but Chilean checkpoints (controles) are frequent, so treat it as zero when driving.
