Can an American Drive in Chad? — IDP Recommended, No Side Switch, Zero Alcohol

Chad is one of the more challenging places in Africa to drive, and any American visitor planning to take the wheel should check current travel and security advice first. The licensing side is manageable; what demands respect is the environment — long distances, sparse infrastructure and a zero-tolerance alcohol rule.

The verdict for American licence holders

You can drive in Chad on your US licence, and an International Driving Permit is strongly recommended to carry with it. Checkpoints are common, and officials and rental desks expect to see the IDP alongside your American licence and passport. Arrange the IDP at home before you fly, since you cannot obtain one in Chad, and keep all three documents together whenever you drive.

One hurdle you can skip: the side of the road

The United States drives on the right, and so does Chad. There is no side switch to relearn, which removes the adjustment that most often catches foreign drivers elsewhere. Roundabouts, junctions and overtaking all run the way your instincts already expect — a small but real comfort on roads where almost everything else is unfamiliar.

A flat zero on alcohol

Chad enforces a 0.0 BAC limit — a complete ban, not the looser thresholds some US states use. There is no margin at all: do not drink anything before driving. Combined with frequent checkpoints, this is one rule you cannot afford to treat casually.

Roads, distances and the basics

The posted limits are 50 km/h in towns, 80 on rural roads and 100 on the better highways, but conditions rarely justify the higher numbers. Outside N’Djamena, expect unsealed roads, sand, long gaps between fuel stops and very little after-dark lighting. Carry water, spare fuel and a plan for breakdowns, and avoid driving at night. The emergency number is 112, though response outside the capital can be limited.
