Chad 2026 for British Drivers: Convert to a Chadian Licence

Chad is a demanding place to drive, and the honest version of this page is short on fine print because reliable, published enforcement figures for the country are thin. What is solid is the licensing position and two adjustments that will shape your whole trip.

The licence verdict for British drivers

GOV.UK is blunt: you must convert your UK driving licence to a Chadian one to drive in Chad. An International Driving Permit is not the route it gives, so do not rely on one. For a short visit, the practical option is a vehicle with a local driver. If officers stop you, they may ask for your passport, driving licence and vehicle registration documents.

The FCDO advises against all travel to the north, the Lake Chad region and within 30 km of most borders, and against all but essential travel to the rest of Chad, including N’Djamena. GOV.UK also says not to travel by road after dark.

The biggest change: Chad drives on the right

Britain drives on the left; Chad drives on the right. This is the single adjustment most likely to catch you out, and the danger window is your first day — joining a roundabout that now flows the other way, pulling out of a fuel stop, or an instinctive glance the wrong way at a junction. Keep your first hour off the busy roads of N’Djamena and be deliberate at every turn until the new side stops feeling backwards.

A zero-alcohol limit, and roads to respect

Chad’s blood-alcohol limit is 0.0 — treat it as a total ban, well below the 0.08 a driver from England or Wales is used to. There is no “one drink” margin.

Posted limits sit at roughly 50 km/h in towns, 80 on rural roads and 100 on the few faster routes, but the bigger reality is condition rather than the number on a sign. Outside the capital, sealed roads give way to gravel and sand, distances between fuel and help are long, and many journeys are only sensible in a 4x4 with a local plan. Drive to the road in front of you, not to the limit. GOV.UK lists 2020 for police and 1212 for fire and ambulance.
