Can an Indian Drive in Chad? — IDP Recommended, the Side Switch & Zero Alcohol

Chad is a demanding self-drive destination, and any Indian visitor planning to take the wheel should check current travel and security guidance before committing. The licensing part is manageable; the real work is adjusting to the side of the road and respecting a zero-tolerance alcohol rule on roads where help is scarce.

The verdict for Indian licence holders

You can drive in Chad on your Indian licence, and an International Driving Permit is strongly recommended to carry with it. Checkpoints are frequent, and officials and rental desks expect the IDP alongside your Indian licence and passport — particularly useful as a certified translation of a non-Latin licence. Arrange the IDP in India before you fly, since you cannot obtain one locally, and keep the three documents together whenever you drive.

The biggest adjustment: driving on the right

India drives on the left; Chad drives on the right. This is the change most likely to catch you out, and the risk concentrates in your first day — pulling out of a fuel stop, taking a junction, or glancing the wrong direction by reflex. With frequent checkpoints and unfamiliar roads, take your opening session slowly and stay deliberate at every turn until the new orientation settles in.

A flat zero on alcohol

Chad enforces a 0.0 BAC limit — a complete ban, and stricter than India’s 0.03. There is no margin: do not drink anything before driving. With checkpoints common across the country, this is a rule to treat as absolute.

Roads, distances and the basics

Posted limits are 50 km/h in towns, 80 on rural roads and 100 on the better highways, but the surface rarely justifies the higher figures. Beyond N’Djamena, expect unsealed roads, sand, long gaps between fuel stops and almost no lighting after dark. Carry water and spare fuel, avoid night driving, and build extra time into every leg. The emergency number is 112, though response outside the capital is limited.
