Can an American Drive in the Cayman Islands? — Valid, but You Switch to the Left

The Cayman Islands make for easy, low-stress driving once you clear two hurdles at the start: the side of the road, and a permit most American visitors don’t expect.

The verdict for American licence holders

You can drive in the Cayman Islands on your US licence, but there is a local step. The islands require visitors to hold a temporary visitor’s driving permit, which the rental company issues against your US licence for a small fee at pickup — without it you are not legally driving. An International Driving Permit is recommended to carry as well, but the local permit is the document that actually authorises you here. The switch to the left

This is the part to take seriously. The Cayman Islands drive on the left, the British way, which for an American driver is a true side switch. The errors cluster in the first hour — drifting right after a turn, glancing the wrong way at a junction, and above all the roundabouts, which now flow clockwise and require you to give way to traffic from the right. Grand Cayman has plenty of them. Take your first drive on quieter roads, talk yourself through each roundabout, and the reflex settles within a day.

After that, it is gentle

Once the left-hand switch clicks, the driving is genuinely relaxed. Grand Cayman’s roads are well surfaced and clearly signed, distances are short, and the main frustrations are ordinary tourist congestion around Seven Mile Beach and George Town at peak times.
