Your US licence is enough for a short trip to Cameroon. The U.S. State Department’s country page says Cameroonian law does not require an international driver’s license, and that a valid licence from any U.S. state or territory is valid for stays of less than three months. Traffic keeps to the right, as at home. So the paperwork is the easy part; the hard part is everything the State Department lists after it.
Roads that the weather decides
The department describes Cameroon’s road networks as poorly maintained and not well lit. During the rainy season from April to November, many roads are not passable even with four-wheel-drive vehicles. It lists a lack of traffic signs, poorly trained and undisciplined drivers, inadequately maintained vehicles and indifference to pedestrians and cyclists as hazards, along with excessive speed, wildlife and livestock.
So the plan is built around time and margin:
- Outside major cities, travel with extra fuel, food and water.
- Bring a reliable means of communication, such as a satellite phone or radio, because mobile coverage is limited.
- Do not count on rescue: professional roadside assistance is not available.
- Allow for a day that ends early. UK advice, cited on this page, is to avoid travelling after dark, especially in rural areas.
Roadblocks: what the State Department advises
Security forces stop motorists on the pretext of minor or non-existent violations to search vehicles and check passengers’ papers. They may also extort bribes. The department’s guidance is practical:
- Carry your passport and other identity documents, with the licence and vehicle documents at hand.
- Drive with the doors locked and windows closed.
- If stopped, stay inside with the doors locked and open the window slightly to talk.
- Do not let soldiers or police enter your vehicle, and do not get into the vehicle of anyone who claims to be an official.
- Remain courteous and calm; if threatened, do not resist.
- Do not pay bribes. Ask the officer for a citation to be paid at the local court.
- Report any incident to the U.S. Embassy in Yaoundé.
After an accident
Remain inside the vehicle and wait for the police. The department notes that it is illegal to move the vehicle before they arrive, but that if a hostile mob forms or you feel your safety is in danger, you should leave and go directly to the nearest police station to report the incident. It also says not to stop at the scene of an accident or at intersections where people have gathered, because mobs can develop quickly.
Hire cars, drivers and public transport
The department advises avoiding all public transportation and hiring private transport from a reliable source, since minibuses, buses, trains and ferries are unregulated and often overcrowded. If you rent a car, make sure it is adequately insured, preferably by written confirmation from the insurance company and not just the hire firm. If you hire a car with a driver, confirm you are not liable for any accident or damage.

Few roads allow either limit, which is why the figures matter little in practice. A fire extinguisher, first-aid kit and warning triangle are listed as required in the car.
