Quick Answer

An American licence holder can drive in Cameroon, and an International Driving Permit is strongly recommended — Cameroon is largely French-speaking and an IDP carries the translation that police at frequent checkpoints expect. Cameroon drives on the right like the US, so the real challenges are road conditions, checkpoints and the risk of driving after dark, not the side of the road.

Cameroon packs an enormous range into one country — rainforest in the south, savanna and highlands toward the north — and a vehicle is often the only practical way to move between them. For an American the licensing side is manageable and the road runs on the side you know; the demands here come from the roads themselves and the checkpoints along them.

The verdict for US licence holders

You can drive in Cameroon on your US licence, but an International Driving Permit is strongly recommended. Cameroon is mostly French-speaking, and police checkpoints on main routes are routine; an IDP gives officers a translated version of your credentials and keeps those stops short. Carry the IDP, your US licence and your passport together at all times, and arrange the IDP in the States before you go — you cannot get one locally.

No side switch — the road conditions are the real test

Cameroon drives on the right, the same as the US, so there is no instinct to retrain. The actual difficulty is the network: surfaces swing from decent paved highway to deeply potholed or unpaved track, often without warning, and posted limits — around 50 km/h in towns, 80 rural and 100 on highways — describe an ideal the road rarely supports. Drive to the surface, not the sign. Wet-season rain can wash out or flood sections, and a higher-clearance vehicle pays off outside the cities.

Two cautions matter more than any number. Avoid driving after dark wherever possible — unlit roads, slow trucks, livestock and pedestrians make night travel the single biggest hazard. And check current advisories before planning routes near the Far North or the Anglophone North-West and South-West regions, where security conditions affect overland travel. The alcohol limit is 0.08, nominally the same as much of the US, but the environment leaves no room for impairment.

Fuel runs around $1.15 a litre. Check your paperwork with the Driving Permit Checker, read the full Cameroon driving guide, and the wider guide to driving fines abroad is useful if a checkpoint dispute arises. The emergency number is 112.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes for a short visit, but an IDP is strongly recommended. Cameroon is mostly Francophone, and the IDP translates your licence for the police checks that are common on main routes. Carry licence, IDP and passport together.

Check if your licence is valid

Yes — both drive on the right, so there is no side switch. The bigger issues are road surface, signage and security on certain routes.

0.08 BAC, the same figure as much of the US, but conditions leave no margin — unlit roads, livestock and pedestrians make any impairment dangerous. The safe approach is none before driving.
