Can an American Drive in Cambodia? — IDP Required, No Side Switch
United States
Cambodia
An American licence holder can drive in Cambodia, but an International Driving Permit is required, not just recommended — carry it alongside your US licence. There's no side switch (Cambodia drives on the right like home); the real challenge is dense, informal traffic and a stricter 0.05 alcohol limit.
The key fact an American needs about driving in Cambodia isn’t the side of the road — it’s the paperwork, because here the IDP is mandatory rather than a nicety.
The licence verdict: IDP required
You can drive in Cambodia on your American licence, but an International Driving Permit is required, not merely recommended. Carry the IDP, your US licence and your passport together; without the IDP your licence is not considered valid for foreign drivers here, and that gap can cost you at a checkpoint or with an insurer after an incident. Arrange the permit in the US before you fly — you cannot get one in Cambodia.
No side switch — but the traffic is the real test
For an American driver the direction is familiar: Cambodia drives on the right, just like home, so junctions and roundabouts won’t fight your instincts. What will is the flow. Traffic in Phnom Penh and the larger towns is dense and informal — motorbikes weave constantly, lane discipline is loose, and right-of-way is negotiated more than enforced. Drive defensively, keep your speed down, and give yourself room. The alcohol limit is 0.05, under the 0.08 you know, so don’t bank on a drink before driving.
Speeds and conditions
Limits are modest: 40 km/h in town, 60 km/h on rural roads, up to 100 km/h on the better highways. Outside the cities, surfaces and lighting deteriorate, so rural night driving is best avoided. Fuel is around $1.15 a litre. The emergency number is 112, though response outside the capital can be slow — good travel insurance with breakdown cover earns its keep here.
Before you collect the keys
Carry your IDP, US licence and passport at all times — the IDP is the document that actually makes your licence count. Confirm your requirements with the Driving Permit Checker, and read the wider rules on our Cambodia driving guide before you set off.

Yes. Cambodia drives on the right, the same as the United States, so there's no mirror-image adjustment — your instincts at junctions carry over, even if local traffic flow does not.
The limit is 0.05, below the typical US 0.08. Treat it as zero before driving — enforcement and penalties are real.
