Yes, a German licence needs no IDP in Bulgaria. Buy an e-vignette before using motorways and main roads (EUR 10 for a week, EUR 5.3 for a day); the motorway limit is 140 km/h and the alcohol limit 0.05.
German drivers can treat Bulgaria as an easy country on paper: same EU licence, same 0.05 alcohol limit, same side of the road, and the same 112 for emergencies. The cost of that ease is complacency about two things, the vignette and the road quality once you leave the motorway.
Your Führerschein is enough
An EU licence is valid in Bulgaria without an IDP or a translation. Take the licence, your passport or ID and the vehicle papers. If you are towing or driving something heavier than a car, the vignette prices below do not apply, since they cover vehicles up to 3.5 t; a heavier vehicle falls under a different regime that this page does not cover.
Bulgaria’s equipment list is stricter than the German one in one place. The record shows a warning triangle, first-aid kit, reflective vest and fire extinguisher all as required. In Germany the extinguisher is only recommended. A rental car should carry all four, but check the boot before you leave the depot.
The vignette: what you pay now
Bulgaria uses an electronic vignette, bought online or at a point of sale and tied to your number plate. There is no barrier, so enforcement works by camera. The toll operator’s notice sets these prices from 1 August 2026:

140 km/h, then potholes
The legal ceiling on a Bulgarian motorway is 140 km/h, ten above the 130 km/h that Germany recommends on the Autobahn (where no general limit applies). Rural roads are 90 km/h, towns 50 km/h, the same as Germany’s town figure. Rural roads are 10 km/h lower than Germany’s 100. Away from the new motorways, expect uneven surfaces, patched asphalt, slow farm traffic and unlit vehicles after dark.

Winter tyres in Bulgaria — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are compulsory on fixed dates in Bulgaria: 15 Nov - 1 Mar.
- Legal winter tread minimum: 4 mm (4 mm applies to tyres that are not winter tyres; winter tyres need 1.6 mm) — not the 1.6 mm figure most guides quote, which is the year-round minimum.
- Accepted marking: Winter-designed tyre OR any tyre with at least 4 mm tread (no M+S/3PMSF requirement)
