Yes, if your Chinese licence comes with a legalised Bulgarian translation (Road Traffic Act, art. 161). China issues no IDP. Buy an e-vignette first; the alcohol limit is 0.05%.
The mistake that costs visitors money in Bulgaria is not a speed camera. It is driving onto a motorway without the vignette. Before that, a Chinese licence needs one document added.
The licence rule for Chinese drivers
China is a party to neither the 1949 nor the 1968 road convention and issues no IDP. Bulgaria’s Road Traffic Act, art. 161, does not stop there: it makes a licence issued abroad valid for its category in several cases, and one of them is a licence accompanied by a legalised translation into Bulgarian. That is your route. Arrange the translation before you drive, carry it with your Chinese licence and passport, and ask the hire company to confirm in writing that it accepts the pair. Traffic keeps right, as in China.
Buy the e-vignette before you drive on
Motorways and main roads outside towns run on an electronic vignette tied to the plate, with no booths to remind you. From 1 August 2026 a car pays EUR 5.30 a day, EUR 10.00 a week, EUR 19.90 for 30 days, EUR 35.90 for three months or EUR 64.50 a year, sold online and at border points, post offices and large fuel stations. Speeds, surfaces and the limit
Motorways allow 140 km/h, rural roads 90 and towns 50, but Global Affairs Canada warns of aggressive driving, poor lighting, missing signs and potholes away from the main corridors. Drive to the surface, not the sign. Headlights or side lights must be on even in daylight, and traffic police issue on-the-spot fines for minor offences. The alcohol limit is 0.05%. Winter tyres in Bulgaria — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are compulsory on fixed dates in Bulgaria: 15 Nov - 1 Mar.
- Legal winter tread minimum: 4 mm (4 mm applies to tyres that are not winter tyres; winter tyres need 1.6 mm) — not the 1.6 mm figure most guides quote, which is the year-round minimum.
- Accepted marking: Winter-designed tyre OR any tyre with at least 4 mm tread (no M+S/3PMSF requirement)
