Hopping over to the British Virgin Islands from the US? You can drive there, but two things work differently from home, and both are worth knowing before you reach the rental counter.
The licence
Canada’s travel advice says visitors staying less than 30 days can drive on their home licence, and those staying longer need a local temporary permit from a car rental agency or the Traffic Licensing Office, issued against a valid licence or an international permit. The UK Foreign Office gives the same 30-day rule for UK licences. Confirm with your rental company when you book whether it issues the temporary permit for a US licence, and keep your licence, any permit and your passport together.
Left-hand traffic in a left-hand-drive car
The BVI drives on the left, the opposite of the United States, yet the UK Foreign Office notes that most cars are left-hand drive. Your seat feels normal while the road does not, so overtaking, judging the kerb and pulling out of junctions all need conscious thought. Take the first drive somewhere quiet and remind yourself to keep left after every turn.
