Can Americans Drive in the British Virgin Islands? — Local Permit + Left-Hand Driving

Hopping over to the British Virgin Islands with a US licence? You can absolutely drive here — but the BVI does a couple of things differently to home, and it is worth knowing both before you reach the rental counter.

The licence answer for Americans

You can drive in the BVI as a visitor on your US licence. In practice, the islands run a temporary local driving permit for visitors, and the car-hire company normally issues it for you at the desk when you show a valid US licence. Bringing an International Driving Permit as well is a small insurance policy — it is a recognised translation and saves any back-and-forth. Keep your US licence, the permit and your passport together.

Left-hand driving in a left-hand-drive car

Here is the quirk that catches Americans out. The BVI drives on the left — opposite to the United States — but many of the cars are still left-hand drive, the layout you know from home. So your seat feels normal while the road does not. The result is that overtaking, judging the kerb and pulling out of junctions all need conscious thought. Give your first drive somewhere quiet and remind yourself to keep left every time you turn.

What the roads are really like

Forget speed. The BVI’s roads, especially on Tortola, are steep, narrow and tightly wound, with blind bends and big drop-offs and very little in the way of crash barriers. Posted limits are low and the terrain enforces a gentle pace far more effectively than any sign. Use low gears on the hills, sound your horn before blind corners as locals do, and watch for oncoming traffic taking the inside line.
