Can a US Licence Drive in Brazil? 2026 — Yes for 180 Days, With an IDP

The short answer to “can you drive to Brazil from the US” is no, not on roads alone. You can drive through Mexico and Central America as far as Panama, but the Darién Gap between Panama and Colombia has no road at all. People who make the trip ship their vehicle over that stretch and carry on south through Colombia. Almost every American who drives in Brazil does it the simpler way: fly in, rent a car, and drive on the right, just like at home.

What follows is about that rental-car trip. The State Department’s summary is blunt: poor driving, bad roads and dense traffic make Brazilian roads more hazardous than American ones.

How long your US license lasts

Article 142 of Brazil’s traffic code leaves recognition of foreign licences to international agreements and to rules set by CONTRAN, the national traffic council. Government advice for visitors is consistent on the time limit: a home licence works for up to 180 days, and after that a Brazilian licence is needed.

On the permit, sources differ in emphasis. Canada’s travel advice tells visitors to carry an international driving permit, because it serves as an official Portuguese translation of the licence. The U.S. State Department’s own wording ties its permit advice to stays of more than 180 days, and names the Inter-American Driving Permit, available through AAA. The practical answer for a short trip: buy the AAA permit before you fly. It costs little, a police officer or rental agent can read it, and it cannot be issued once you are in Brazil. Zero alcohol, with real checkpoints

The Lei Seca of 2008, tightened in 2012, now sits in article 276 of the traffic code: any concentration of alcohol in the blood or breath triggers article 165. That means a fine of BRL 2,934.70, a 12-month driving ban, the licence taken on the spot and the car held. From 0.6 g/l, or with visible impairment, it becomes a crime under article 306, punishable by six months to three years in prison. The State Department notes that checkpoints are common in urban areas and that drivers are picked at random for breath tests. Most US states allow 0.08. Brazil allows nothing.

Habits on Brazilian roads

The State Department lists several things that work differently from American driving:

• Yield to the car on your right at uncontrolled junctions.
• Stop signs are rarely enforced, so many drivers treat them as yield signs. Do not assume the cross traffic will stop.
• Drivers often change lanes without signalling, sometimes across several lanes at once.
• Flashing lights or a hand waved out of the window usually means “slow down”.
• Pedestrian crossings are respected only in some places, Brasília among them.
• Everyone in the car must wear a seat belt. Federal law requires child seats for children under 7½, and children from 7½ to 10 must ride in the back.

Lights are a legal point too. On federal highways, drivers must use daytime running lights by day and headlights at night. The traffic code adds dipped headlights in tunnels and in rain or fog.

Speed limits and how fines are counted

Where no sign says otherwise, article 61 sets 110 km/h (68 mph) on dual-carriageway rural highways, 100 km/h (62 mph) on single-carriageway ones and 60 km/h on unpaved roads. In towns the default depends on the road: 80 on expressways, 60 on arterials, 40 on collector roads and 30 on local streets.

Speeding is fined by percentage over the limit, not by how many miles per hour (article 218). Up to 20% over costs BRL 130.16 and 4 points. Between 20% and 50% over: BRL 195.23 and 5 points. More than 50% over is fined three times over, BRL 880.41, with 7 points and a suspension. On a 110 km/h highway, 130 km/h is still the lowest band; 170 km/h is in the top one. Roads, floods and getting help

Federal highways and roads linking large cities are generally in good condition. State and municipal roads in rural areas are not: potholes, unpaved stretches, missing signs and poor lighting, with landslides in the rainy season. The State Department adds that flooding makes some Amazon roads impassable for much of the year. Avoid rural roads after dark.

Roadside help is the other gap. Toll roads generally run their own assistance services. Elsewhere, help is sporadic and informal, through local mechanics. In an emergency, the State Department says the fastest route anywhere in the country is 193, staffed by local fire departments, in Portuguese only. Police are on 190.
