Quick Answer

Three things change for British drivers in Brazil. You switch from driving on the left to the right; you must carry an International Driving Permit with your UK licence; and the drink-drive limit is effectively zero under the Lei Seca, against the relatively lenient 0.08 you have at home.

A British road trip in Brazil involves three real adjustments, and the first is the one most likely to catch you out: Brazil drives on the right. After a lifetime on the left, your instincts are wrong at exactly the moments that matter — pulling out of a fuel station, taking a roundabout (which now flows clockwise from your seat), and that reflexive glance the wrong way at a junction. Give yourself a quiet first hour away from the chaos of São Paulo or Rio traffic, and check deliberately at every turn until it stops feeling backwards. A left-hand-drive car helps more than you expect.

The second adjustment is paperwork. Brazil requires an International Driving Permit carried with your UK photocard licence and passport. It is not optional cover — rental desks ask for it and a roadside check without one is awkward. Get it from the Post Office before you fly; you cannot obtain one in Brazil. The Driving Permit Checker confirms the requirement for your trip.

The third is drink, and it is a steep change. The UK’s 0.08 limit leaves room for a pint; Brazil’s Lei Seca does not. Since 2012 it has run effectively zero tolerance, enforced with night-time and weekend breath-test roadblocks in the cities. One beer can mean a heavy fine, the car impounded and, in clear cases, arrest. If you are driving, drink nothing.

Speeds sit close to home but in km/h: 60 in towns, 80 rural, 110 on motorways. Toll motorways are good; free and rural roads are rougher, and local driving is more assertive than you may be used to. A 10 km/h overshoot is around BRL 130 (≈ €22) plus four points — the Speeding Fine Calculator shows the bands. Fuel is about $1.15/litre; many hire cars are flex-fuel, so weigh cheaper ethanol against its shorter range. Emergency police is 190. Our Brazil driving guide covers the rest before you collect the keys.

The right. As a UK driver you switch from the left, so junctions, roundabouts and overtaking all feel reversed for the first day — take it slowly to start.

Yes. Brazil requires an International Driving Permit alongside your UK licence and passport. Arrange it before you travel; it cannot be issued in Brazil.

Effectively zero under the Lei Seca, enforced since 2012. That is a sharp drop from the UK's 0.08 — treat any alcohol as a no-drive situation.
