Quick Answer

Italian drivers need an International Driving Permit with their licence in Brazil — the EU card is not enough on its own. The Lei Seca makes alcohol effectively zero, far below Italy's 0.05, and the motorway limit is a lower 110 km/h.

If you are used to driving across Europe on your Italian licence alone, Brazil will pull you up short: the EU card is not accepted on its own here. You must carry an International Driving Permit alongside it, arranged in Italy before you leave — it cannot be issued in Brazil, and the rental company will ask for both documents together. Sort it early; it is the one piece of admin that can stop your trip at the desk.

The drink-drive rule is the next adjustment, and it is a sharp one. Italy allows 0.05; Brazil’s Lei Seca enforces an effective zero. Police run roadside breath-test operations, often after dark and at weekends, and a single positive reading brings a heavy fine and an immediate licence suspension. The driver has had nothing — that is the only safe rule.

Brazilian traffic will, oddly, feel half-familiar. Cities are assertive and quick to fill a gap, much like Italian driving, so you will read the flow faster than most visitors. What is different is the road quality beyond the toll motorways: surfaces deteriorate quickly on rural routes, and you will not find the ZTL-style restrictions you navigate at home. Brazil drives on the right, as Italy does, so there is no side to relearn. Speeds are 60 km/h urban, 80 rural and 110 on motorways — lower than your usual 130, so ease off the cruise. Speed cameras are dense on urban arterials, and 10 km/h over costs about BRL 130 (≈ €22) plus four points.

Fuel is cheap at roughly $1.15/litre, and the emergency number is 190. Read the full rules on our Brazil driving guide, confirm the permit requirement with the Driving Permit Checker, and estimate any ticket with the Speeding Fine Calculator. Keep some cash for tolls outside the electronic lanes.
