Quick Answer

Three things matter for Indian drivers in Brazil — you switch from left- to right-hand traffic, you must carry an International Driving Permit with your licence, and the Lei Seca makes the alcohol limit effectively zero, stricter than India's 0.03.

The headline change for an Indian driver in Brazil happens in the first ten minutes: India drives on the left, Brazil on the right. Everything your reflexes know — which way to look pulling out, which side of a roundabout to take, where the gearstick and mirrors sit — is mirrored. The danger window is your first day, and the classic mistakes are joining a roundabout the wrong way and drifting left after a turn. Pick up the car somewhere quiet, not in São Paulo traffic, and consciously check every junction until right-hand driving stops feeling backwards.

Before any of that, sort the permit. Brazil requires an International Driving Permit carried with your Indian licence — the two together, never the licence alone. Get the IDP in India before departure; it cannot be issued once you arrive, and rental desks will not hand over the keys without it.

The third thing is the bottle. India’s limit is a low 0.03; Brazil’s Lei Seca is effectively zero, and it is enforced through roadside breath-test operations, often at night and weekends. A positive reading brings a heavy fine and immediate licence suspension. Make sure whoever drives has had nothing at all.

Once those are handled, the rest is manageable. Speeds run 60 km/h in towns, 80 on rural roads and 110 on motorways — close to home figures. The toll motorways are good; roads beyond them get rough, and city traffic is assertive, so leave plenty of space. Speed cameras are common, and 10 km/h over costs about BRL 130 (≈ €22) plus four points. Fuel is cheap at roughly $1.15/litre, and the emergency number is 190.

Read the full local rules on our Brazil driving guide, confirm the IDP requirement with the Driving Permit Checker, and estimate any ticket with the Speeding Fine Calculator. Carry cash for tolls outside the electronic lanes.
