Start with the document, because without it you are not legal to drive in Brazil at all. The toll motorways are well surfaced and worth using; the catch is everything beyond them. Rural roads degrade quickly, and city traffic is fast, close and assertive, with lane markings treated as suggestions during rush hour. Take the first hour somewhere quiet to read the local rhythm.

Speed enforcement is heavy on urban arterials, with fixed and mobile cameras; a 10 km/h overshoot costs around BRL 130 (≈ €22) plus four licence points.
