Driving Botswana's Left-Hand Roads in 2026: IDP Required

Botswana is one of Africa’s great self-drive destinations — the Okavango, the Kalahari, the salt pans — and for an American driver the trip is very doable once one document is sorted at home. After that, two things separate it from driving in the US: the side of the road and the distances.

An International Driving Permit is required. The U.S. State Department’s country page says “a valid international driver’s license, along with vehicle registration documents, is required to drive in Botswana”, and that drivers should always carry them. In practice that means your US licence plus an IDP, with the rental agreement and registration papers kept in the car. In the US the IDP is issued by AAA or the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA); you cannot get one after you land. The same page asks that any traffic accident be reported to the Botswana Police Service.

The first real adjustment is the side of the road. The US drives on the right; Botswana drives on the left, so your reflexes are mirrored — roundabouts flow the other way, and your instinctive glance at a junction points wrong. The danger window is your first day, especially pulling onto a road or merging. Practise somewhere quiet, even an empty car park, before you take on Gaborone or a busy highway; an hour of deliberate driving is usually enough for it to start feeling natural.

The second is distance and fuel, which matters more here than the rulebook. Speed limits are modest — 50 km/h in towns, 80 on rural roads, up to 100 on the better highways — but the roads between destinations are long, lonely and crossed by wildlife and livestock. Dawn and dusk are the worst for animals on the carriageway, so avoid driving then where you can. Stations are widely spaced; fill up whenever you pass one rather than trusting the next town to have a working pump. Keep to zero alcohol before driving — the legal limit is no excuse on roads where a wandering cow or a pothole can appear without warning. The emergency numbers are police 999, ambulance 997 and fire 998.
