Quick Answer

Yes — an American licence holder can drive in Botswana, with an International Driving Permit recommended. The single biggest adjustment is the side switch: the US drives on the right, Botswana on the left — and the second is planning fuel and distance for long safari roads.

Botswana is one of Africa’s great self-drive destinations — the Okavango, the Kalahari, the salt pans — and for an American driver the trip is very doable. But two things separate it from driving at home, and neither is the licence.

The verdict is easy: you can drive in Botswana on your US licence, and an International Driving Permit is recommended. Rental desks expect it, and a checkpoint officer reads it faster than your state licence. Carry the IDP, your licence and your passport together, and arrange the permit at home — you cannot get a US-issued one in Botswana.

The first real adjustment is the side of the road. The US drives on the right; Botswana drives on the left, so your reflexes are mirrored — roundabouts flow the other way, and your instinctive glance at a junction points wrong. The danger window is your first day, especially pulling onto a road or merging. Practise somewhere quiet, even an empty car park, before you take on Gaborone or a busy highway; an hour of deliberate driving is usually enough for it to start feeling natural.

The second is distance and fuel, which matters more here than the rulebook. Speed limits are modest — 50 km/h in towns, 80 on rural roads, up to 100 on the better highways — but the roads between destinations are long, lonely and crossed by wildlife and livestock. Dawn and dusk are the worst for animals on the carriageway, so avoid driving then where you can. Fuel is around $1.02/litre, but stations are widely spaced; fill up whenever you pass one rather than trusting the next town to have a working pump. Keep to zero alcohol before driving — the legal limit is no excuse on roads where a wandering cow or a pothole can appear without warning. The emergency number is 112.

Read the country detail on our Botswana driving guide, confirm your paperwork with the Driving Permit Checker, and plan your fuel stops carefully — on the long Kalahari legs that planning is the difference between an adventure and a problem.

On the left. The United States drives on the right, so this is a genuine side switch — the first day, at junctions and roundabouts, is where it catches people out.

Towns are 50 km/h, rural roads 80 km/h and the better highways up to 100 km/h. Watch for animals on rural roads, especially at dawn and dusk.
