🚗 Bosnia Driving Permit: UK Licence OK, 0.03 BAC (2026)

For British drivers, Bosnia and Herzegovina pairs two changes at once — the side of the road and the standard of the road — which is what makes the first day the one that matters.

Can you drive on your UK licence? Yes. It is accepted by police and rental companies. Because Bosnia is not in the EU, an International Driving Permit is recommended to sit beside your licence as a recognised translation. Arrange it in the UK before you travel; you cannot get one in Bosnia.

The headline adjustment is the side switch. Britain drives on the left; Bosnia drives on the right. Everything you do by reflex inverts — pulling out of a fuel station, taking a roundabout (now anticlockwise), checking the correct mirror, judging your road position on a narrow bend. The danger window is your first hour, so start somewhere quiet rather than central Sarajevo, and stay deliberate at every junction until “right” stops feeling wrong.

The second change is the terrain. Outside the limited motorways, Bosnia is mountain driving — narrow passes, single carriageways and edges that drop away with little protection. Maintenance is patchy once you leave the main routes, and a handful of rural areas still carry hazards from the 1990s conflict, so keep to roads that are clearly in use and avoid unmarked verges and fields.

Speed limits read 50 km/h in towns, 80 on rural roads and 130 on motorways, though the corner usually sets your real pace. On alcohol, Bosnia’s 0.03 BAC limit is far below England and Wales’s 0.08 — combined with mountain roads, treat it as zero. A speeding penalty around 10 km/h over costs roughly BAM 40-100 (around EUR 20-50), often paid on the spot, so carry local cash.

Fuel is about $1.38 a litre and emergencies are 112, same as home. Signal thins in the valleys, so save offline maps first.
