Bosnia on an Indian Licence — The Side Switch & Mountain Roads

Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the most rewarding self-drive countries in the Balkans, but for an Indian visitor it asks for two real adjustments — and only one of them is the paperwork. The first is the side of the road; the second is the kind of road itself, because this is a country of mountains with very little motorway.

The side switch comes first

India drives on the left; Bosnia drives on the right. That reversal is the single thing most likely to catch you out, and the danger window is your first day — pulling out of a fuel station, taking a roundabout the opposite way, or glancing the wrong direction at a junction. Spend your first hour on quiet roads, not in Sarajevo traffic, and be deliberate at every turn until “stay right” stops feeling like a decision. An IDP is recommended here: it’s not always demanded, but rental desks and roadside police expect to see it next to your Indian licence and passport. Mountain roads, not motorways

The map distances lie. Apart from the short A1 corridor around Sarajevo and Zenica, almost every journey runs on two-lane roads that wind through mountains — tight switchbacks, unlit tunnels, slow trucks you’ll wait behind for kilometres, and drops with patchy barriers. The posted 130 km/h motorway figure rarely applies in practice; your real average will be far lower. Drive to the bend, not the sign, and don’t plan an ambitious day’s mileage. As a long-standing caution, the country still has cleared but un-developed areas from the 1990s war: stay on sealed roads and marked tracks, and never park or walk onto open ground in rural regions.

Alcohol, winter and the costs

The alcohol limit is 0.03, the same as India’s and effectively a near-ban — treat driving as alcohol-free. In the cold months winter tyres are mandatory, with chains sometimes needed on passes, so confirm a winter rental is properly equipped.
