Bosnia for Chinese Drivers — Bring the IDP, Then Mind the Mountains

The single thing to settle before a Bosnia trip on a Chinese licence is the permit. China is outside Europe’s licence-recognition net, so your national card is not accepted alone — you need an International Driving Permit carried with it. Arrange it in China; there is no way to issue one once you have landed, and rental desks and police both expect to see the pair.

With that sorted, the driving is where Bosnia earns its reputation. The country has only a short stretch of motorway, so almost every journey runs on two-lane roads that climb and fall through the mountains. Bends are tight, sightlines are short, and you will sit behind slow trucks on gradients with limited chances to pass safely. The posted rural limit is 80 km/h, but the terrain sets the real pace. In remote countryside, a few areas still carry hazards left from the 1990s conflict — stay on surfaced, marked roads and avoid wandering onto verges or unmarked tracks.

You already drive on the right, so there is no side-switch to relearn, which removes the usual first-day danger. Town limits are 50 km/h and the motorway sign reads 130 km/h, a touch higher than the 120 you know from home. The alcohol limit is 0.03 BAC — marginally above China’s 0.02 but tight enough that the safe answer is not to drink before driving. Enforcement is mostly mobile patrols, and a 10 km/h overshoot costs roughly BAM 40-100 (≈ €20-50), usually paid in cash on the spot.
