Can an Indian Drive in Bermuda? — Carry an IDP, Drive on the Left

Bermuda is a small, neatly kept island in the North Atlantic, and for Indian visitors it has one immediate advantage: it drives on the left, exactly like home. The reflexes that catch Indian drivers out across most of the world — looking the wrong way, drifting to the wrong side after a turn — simply do not come into play here.

Driving on an Indian licence

An Indian licence holder can drive in Bermuda, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry alongside it. One honest word of warning, because it matters more here than almost anywhere else: Bermuda runs an unusually tight, locally controlled system for visitor vehicles, and the rules around what tourists may hire and drive are stricter than on a typical Caribbean or Atlantic island. Rather than guess, confirm directly with your accommodation or hire company what you will actually be allowed to drive, and what documents they require, before you fly. Bring your IDP, Indian licence and passport together — and get the IDP in India, as it cannot be issued on arrival.

The side of the road is no obstacle

Because Bermuda drives on the left, there is no side switch to relearn from India. What replaces that challenge is geography: the island is tiny and densely settled, the roads are narrow, walled and winding, and there are no motorways. Distances are short, but you rarely travel quickly, so plan journeys by time rather than by the small number of miles on the map.
