For an American, Belize is one of the easiest places in the region to pick up a car. It drives on the right, English is the official language, and the road signs read the way you expect. That leaves you free to concentrate on the two things that actually differ: the documents and the state of the tarmac.

Can you drive there on a US licence?

Yes. Your US licence is accepted for a tourist stay, and the sensible companion is an International Driving Permit. It is rarely demanded by law, but rental firms in Belize City and on Ambergris Caye, and the occasional checkpoint, deal with you faster when you present the IDP, your home licence and your passport together. Same side of the road — so what changes?

Belize drives on the right, exactly as you do at home, so there is no side switch to relearn. What does change is the network: there are no interstates here. The four trunk roads — Northern, Western, Hummingbird and Southern — are mainly two-lane, and beyond them you meet gravel, potholes and the odd one-lane bridge. Posted limits are inconsistently signed, so the honest advice is to drive to the surface and the light rather than a number. The practical details

Fuel runs around $1.32 a litre, with stations clustered in the towns and sparse in the south — top up before long legs. The drink-drive limit is 0.08, the familiar US ceiling, but the combination of unlit roads and free-roaming animals after dark makes zero the safe choice.
