Americans can drive to Belize and, once they are there, drive on a US licence for three months after entry. The side of the road also matches home: Belize keeps right. Everything difficult is on the surface, not in the paperwork.
Getting there by road
Belize can be reached overland from the north through Mexico, which makes a drive from the US possible. The licence rule is only one piece. Mexican entry, vehicle permits and insurance are outside the sources behind this page, so confirm them with each country before you commit. The three-month rule in the State Department’s words
The department’s Belize page says valid U.S. or international driver’s permits “are accepted in Belize only for a period of three months after initial entry”. A holiday fits inside that, so you need no IDP. The word “only” matters for long stays, because after three months a US licence stops covering you.
What the State Department says about the roads
Conditions range from two-lane paved roads to dirt or gravel tracks. Many roads lack markings, reflectors and shoulders, which contributes to crashes, and many urban streets have no lane markings, which makes driving confusing. Some major-highway bridges narrow to a single lane, sometimes without warning. Three more points deserve attention:
- Night driving is strongly discouraged.
- Roadside assistance is frequently unavailable, and public phones are rare.
- Cell service is mostly reliable but patchy in remote areas. Download offline maps before you leave a town.
People, bikes and animals on the road
Bicycles are numerous and part of normal traffic. The department says cyclists do not always follow basic laws: they commonly ignore red lights and stop signs and often ride against traffic. Cyclists and pedestrians often have no reflectors or bright clothing, and they are hard to see after dark. Give them room, and do not overtake blind.
If you have a crash
Contact the local police and explain the emergency. If someone is critically injured, go to the nearest hospital. If there are no injuries or risk to life, wait for the police and, if you can, take photographs before any vehicle is moved. Do not move the vehicles or leave the scene when there are no injuries. If you hit someone, stop and give assistance, then report it to the police.
A realistic day plan
With no reliable roadside help and a strong warning against night driving, build each day around daylight. Fill the tank before a long leg, carry water, and agree on a check-in time with someone at your hotel. If a one-lane bridge appears with no warning, slow down early and give way to whoever is already on it, as you would for any oncoming vehicle on a narrow section. Treat unmarked urban streets like uncontrolled junctions and expect traffic from every side.
Numbers that may not connect
Belize uses 911, the same digits you know. But the State Department adds that emergency numbers do not always work. Plan on having the number of your hotel, rental company and nearest police station saved, rather than depending on one call.
Alcohol and limits
The blood-alcohol limit is 0.08, the US ceiling, but unlit roads, cyclists and animals after dark make zero the safe rule. Our record has no posted speed limits for Belize, so drive to the road and the light, and watch for speed bumps in villages.
If you would rather not drive
Taxis are common in cities and less so in the countryside; they have green licence plates, and most visitors need to call for one. Buses link cities. Uber and Lyft are not available. The department also warns that second-hand or salvage vehicles and buses are often used for public transport and may lack seatbelts and airbags.
Before you leave the rental lot
- Photograph the car and check the spare tyre.
- Save the rental firm’s and your hotel’s phone numbers.
- Set the day’s route to end before dark.
