Quick Answer

Your Irish licence is valid in Belgium with no IDP needed. The catch is the road, not the paperwork — you swap from driving on the left to driving on the right, and Belgium's priority-to-the-right rule gives way to cars emerging from your right unless signs say otherwise.

For Irish drivers, Belgium is one of the easier European countries on paper — same EU licence, same euro, same general 0.05 alcohol rule. The whole challenge sits in one place: you have spent your driving life on the left, and Belgium runs on the right.

The side switch is the headline

Ireland drives on the left; Belgium drives on the right. Unlike a same-side trip to France, here every instinct you own points the wrong way. The danger window is your first hour — roundabouts now flow clockwise, you’ll drift toward the kerb you’re used to hugging, and the glance-before-pulling-out reflex sends your eyes the wrong direction. Pick the car up and do your first stretch on a quiet road, not the Brussels ring (R0), which merges fast and unforgivingly.

Priority to the right catches Irish drivers out

Belgium applies priorité à droite harder than Ireland’s give-way habits prepare you for. At an unmarked junction, a car emerging from a road on your right has priority — even when you feel you’re on the main road. Locals pull out expecting you to brake. Watch for the yellow diamond (you have priority) versus its absence (you may not), and when in doubt, yield to the right.

No IDP, but mind the cameras

Your Irish licence needs no IDP in Belgium. Speed limits are 50 in town (30 across central Brussels), 70–90 rural, 120 on motorways, with fixed and average-speed cameras throughout; 10 km/h over is around EUR 53, so check the Speeding Fine Calculator before you set a cruise speed. Signs flip between French, Dutch and German depending on the region — Liège, Lüttich and Luik are the same city. Petrol runs about EUR 1.90/litre, emergency is 112, and the full rules are on our Belgium driving guide. Confirm you need nothing extra via the Driving Permit Checker.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. As an EU licence, your Irish card is fully valid in Belgium with no International Driving Permit required. Carry the licence and passport; nothing extra is needed.

Check if your licence is valid

Belgium drives on the right, while Ireland drives on the left. This is the single biggest change for Irish visitors, and the first hour in the car is where most slips happen.

0.05 BAC, looser than Ireland's 0.05 in practice but enforced with routine roadside breath tests. A fail brings an on-the-spot fine and possible ban.
