Barbados on a US Licence — IDP Recommended and You'll Drive on the Left

For an American visitor the licence side is easy: you can drive in Barbados on your US licence, with an International Driving Permit recommended to carry alongside it. Rental companies generally walk you through any local formalities at pick-up, so the documents are not where this trip will test you.

The real adjustment — and it is a big one — is the side of the road. Barbados drives on the left, the opposite of the US, so this is a full side switch and the one thing most likely to catch an American driver out. It is harder than it sounds on Barbados specifically, because the island’s roads are narrow, winding and busy, often with no shoulder and little room to correct a wrong-side drift. Don’t make your first attempt a dash from the airport in traffic; spend ten quiet minutes getting the feel of sitting on the right and steering on the left before you take on a main road. The reflexes that bite are the small ones: turning out of a junction, glancing the wrong way, drifting right at a roundabout that flows the other way.

I will be straight about the data here: specific posted speed limits for Barbados are not well documented, so I won’t quote numbers I cannot stand behind. The practical reality is that island roads keep speeds low anyway — you rarely have the space or sightlines to go fast — so drive to the road in front of you and follow any signage you do see. The drink-drive limit on record is 0.08, the same figure as much of the US, but on unfamiliar narrow roads the safe choice is no alcohol at all.
