Barbados on a US Licence 2026: Visitor Permit Now Abolished

Older guides tell American visitors to buy a Barbados driving permit at the rental desk. That step is gone: Barbados Digital, the public-services guide that Canada’s advice links to, says Visitor Driving Permits have been abolished, and visitors may drive on a foreign licence as long as it is valid for the class of vehicle. Canada’s travel advice adds that an International Driving Permit is only needed when a licence is not in English, so a US licence stands on its own.

Keeping left on island roads

Barbados drives on the left. Roundabouts are everywhere, and Canada’s advice notes collisions involving visitors at or around them. The same advice lists narrow rural roads, blind curves, poor lighting, missing signs, potholes, pedestrians on the carriageway, and slippery, muddy surfaces after rain. Minibuses with Z plates and the blue or yellow public buses often travel fast.

Numbers that apply

The national maximum reported to the WHO is 80 km/h, and posted signs can set lower limits. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.08 g/dl, the same line most US states use. Renting a car adds a Vehicle Rental Levy of up to BBD 35 per contract. Drivers aged 70 or over may need a medical certificate from a Barbados-based doctor.
