Barbados on a UK Licence 2026: Keep Left, 80 km/h Maximum

Barbados asks very little of a British driver’s reflexes: the steering wheel is on the right, traffic keeps left and the alcohol limit is the one used in England. The differences sit in the details, starting with the number you would ring after a crash.

Licence, permit and the visitor form

You can drive on your UK photocard licence as a visitor. GOV.UK’s international driving permit table lists Barbados under the 1949 IDP, so the safe move is to buy one before you fly; it costs £5.50 at shops offering PayPoint. The Barbados Licensing Authority also describes a visitor permit on its website, BBD 10 for a stay of up to two months, applied for online and sent by email. Accounts of whether it is still demanded differ, so ask the rental company when you book; if it is wanted, the form takes minutes. Drivers aged 70 or over may be asked for a medical certificate from a Barbados-based doctor.

Same side, different roads

Keeping left removes the hardest adjustment, but Canada’s travel advice gives a list of what replaces it: narrow rural roads, blind curves, poor lighting, missing road signs and unmarked roads, plus main roads that turn muddy and slippery after rain. Roundabouts are a known trouble spot, with collisions involving visitors at or near them. If you have a collision, call the police and leave the vehicle where it is until they arrive.

Numbers to know

The national maximum reported to the WHO is 80 km/h for every road type, a long way below a British motorway. The alcohol limit is 0.08 g/dl, matching England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The emergency numbers are the real change: police 211, ambulance 511 and fire 311, not 999.
