Can an Indian Drive in Barbados? — IDP Recommended, No Side Switch

For Indian travellers, Barbados is one of the rare overseas self-drive destinations where the hardest habit of all — switching sides of the road — simply does not apply. The island drives on the left, just like home. That removes the single biggest hazard most Indian drivers face abroad and lets you focus on the things that are genuinely different here.

Can you drive on your Indian licence?

Yes. An Indian licence holder can drive in Barbados, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry alongside it. In practice, the universal route for visitors is the short-term local visitor’s driving permit, which the car-hire company arranges when you collect the vehicle — bring your Indian licence and passport and they handle the paperwork. Sort your IDP at home before you fly; you cannot obtain one in Barbados.

The side of the road is the easy part

Barbados drives on the left, the same as India. There is no reflex to unlearn at junctions, no roundabout flowing the “wrong” way. What does take adjusting is the scale of the roads: outside Bridgetown, the parish lanes are narrow, hedged and winding, with blind bends and little room to pass. Local drivers are courteous — a flash of headlights or a tap of the horn at a corner is a friendly heads-up, not aggression — but you will spend more time in second and third gear than on any open road.

A higher alcohol limit that flatters to deceive

The drink-drive limit here is 0.08, well above the 0.03 you are used to in India. Do not read that as permission. Many of the island’s roads are unlit after dark, junctions appear suddenly, and the combination of an unfamiliar car and a rum-friendly holiday culture catches people out. Treat it as zero before you drive.

Practical notes

Petrol runs around $1.35 a litre, and the emergency number across the island is 911. There is no mandatory in-car equipment list to worry about, but keep your permit, Indian licence and passport together in case of a check.
