The verdict for American licence holders

Your US driving licence is accepted in the Bahamas for the length of a normal tourist stay, and rental companies in Nassau and Freeport will hand you the keys on it. There is no requirement to convert to a Bahamian licence or to hold an International Driving Permit — though an IDP is a cheap, sensible thing to carry alongside your licence and passport if you want to remove any doubt at a roadside check. The one thing that actually catches you out: the left

The Bahamas drives on the left, a hangover from its British past, while the US drives on the right. So you sit on the left of the car while driving on the left of the road, which puts you tight against the centre line with poor visibility for overtaking. Take your first hour on quiet roads. Drink-driving and the practical stuff

The blood-alcohol limit is 0.08, the same as most US states, so the number is familiar — but pair it with an unfamiliar side of the road and the sensible policy is zero. Roads on New Providence are decent; on the Out Islands expect narrow, unlit lanes and the occasional pothole, so daylight driving is wiser.
