Can an American Drive in Azerbaijan? — Carry an IDP, Zero-Alcohol Rule

Searching whether an American can drive in Azerbaijan turns up little hard detail, so here’s the honest version: what’s well established, and what isn’t.

The licence verdict

You can drive in Azerbaijan on your American licence, and carrying an IDP alongside it is strongly advised. Azerbaijani is written in a Latin alphabet but the bureaucracy runs in the local language, and an IDP gives officials and rental staff a translated version of your details — useful at the checkpoints you’ll meet on intercity roads. Carry the IDP, your home licence and your passport together, and arrange the permit in the US before you fly.

No side switch — but a zero-tolerance alcohol rule

For an American driver the direction is familiar: Azerbaijan drives on the right, just like home, so roundabouts and junctions behave as you expect. The hard rule to internalise is alcohol. The limit is 0.0 — a genuine zero, well below the 0.08 you’re used to, and it is taken seriously. Don’t drive after any drink at all; there’s no tolerance to lean on.

Where the data thins out — drive cautiously

This is one of those destinations where reliable, posted national speed limits aren’t well documented, so don’t trust a number you can’t see on a sign. Drive to the road in front of you: outside Baku, surfaces and lighting vary, driving can be assertive, and signage may be sparse or only in the local script. Inside the capital, traffic is dense. Fuel is cheap at roughly $0.55 a litre, so range is rarely the constraint — caution is. The emergency number is 112.
