Polish Licence Down Under 2026: IDP or English Translation
Poland
Australia
Yes, with an IDP or English translation beside your Polish licence; Poland and Australia share the 1949 convention. NSW allows six months. Keep left; the limit is 0.05.
A Polish passport opens Europe with no paperwork at all, so it surprises some travellers that driving in Australia asks for a little more. The licence is accepted, but two things separate Australia from a quick hop to Germany or Czechia.
Can you drive on your Polish licence?
Yes — a Polish licence is valid for visitors. The condition is language: Transport for NSW says a licence not written in English must be carried with an English translation or an International Driving Permit, and Queensland asks for a recognised English translation. Poland and Australia are both parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention, so an IDP issued in Poland is the simplest answer; arrange it before departure, as it is not available locally. Keep the IDP (or translation), your Polish licence and your passport together. NSW lets visitors drive on an overseas licence for up to six months; other states set their own windows.
The first real difference: the side switch
Poland drives on the right; Australia drives on the left. Inside the EU you never deal with this, so it is easy to underestimate. Everything mirrors — roundabouts turn the opposite way and your shoulder-check instinct points the wrong way at first. The risk concentrates in the opening day: leaving a fuel station, your first roundabout, an absent-minded turn. Begin on quiet streets, not in Melbourne traffic, and be deliberate at every junction.
The second difference: slower roads, sharper enforcement
Coming from a 140 km/h autostrada, expect lower limits: towns default to 50 km/h, and open-road limits are set by each state and signed, reaching 130 km/h only on some Northern Territory roads. Cameras, fixed and mobile, are widespread and tolerances are tight. The alcohol limit is 0.05, looser than Poland’s 0.02, but constant random breath testing makes zero the only safe choice.
Outback distances are long, fuel stops sparse, and wildlife at dusk a genuine hazard, so avoid country roads after dark early in your trip. The emergency number is 000.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, as a visitor. Because the licence is not in English, Transport for NSW requires an English translation or an International Driving Permit with it, and Queensland asks for a recognised English translation. Poland and Australia are both parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention, so an IDP issued in Poland works. Bring your passport too.
Australia drives on the left; Poland drives on the right, so this is a real side switch. Roundabouts flow the other way and overtaking instincts reverse. Practise on quiet roads before tackling city traffic.
The general limit is 0.05, looser than Poland's 0.02, but Australia runs random breath tests constantly. Treat it as zero.
