Of all the long-haul self-drive trips an Irish visitor can take, driving in Australia is one of the gentlest to adapt to — and the reasons are simple. You already drive on the correct side, and your licence is already in the right language.

Can you drive on your Irish licence?

Yes. An Irish licence is accepted for visitors throughout Australia, and because it is issued in English there is no translation hurdle at the hire desk. An IDP is therefore optional rather than essential — some travellers carry one as a belt-and-braces backup, but the licence and your passport are what you will actually be asked for. Your home licence covers a tourist stay of around three months; beyond that you would look at converting to a state licence.

The bit that is genuinely easy: same side, same instincts

Ireland and Australia both drive on the left, so there is no mirror-image relearning, no flipped roundabout logic, no wrong-way glance at junctions. Your muscle memory transfers intact. This is the single biggest reason Australia feels more relaxed for Irish drivers than, say, France or Spain would.

What actually demands attention

The challenge is the country itself, not its rulebook. Distances are on a different scale — a “short” rural drive can run for hours with no fuel between, so plan stops and carry water. Wildlife is the real road hazard: kangaroos and livestock at dawn and dusk cause serious crashes, so avoid open country roads after dark when you can.

On the numbers, town limits are 50 km/h, rural 100, motorways 110 — slightly slower than Irish motorways, so ease off the cruise control. The alcohol limit matches home at 0.05, but random breath testing is constant and worth treating as a zero-tolerance regime in practice. Speeding penalties of AUD 200-350 (≈ EUR 120-210) are set by each state, and camera tolerances are unforgiving. Fuel runs around $1.42/litre, and the emergency number is 000.
