Australia on an Indian Licence — Same Side, but Mind the IDP & Cameras
India
Australia
Indian drivers get an unusual head start in Australia — both countries drive on the left, so there is no side switch to relearn. What actually matters — carrying an IDP with your licence, a 110 km/h motorway cap with cameras everywhere, and far stricter breath-testing than the 0.05 limit suggests.
For most visitors, Australia means relearning the side of the road. Indian drivers skip that entirely — both countries drive on the left, so the steering wheel, the roundabouts and the overtaking side all sit where your instincts already expect them. That single fact makes Australia one of the easier self-drive destinations on an Indian licence. The catches lie elsewhere.
Start with the licence
Your Indian licence is accepted for short tourist stays, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry alongside it. The IDP is what rental companies and police want to see paired with your original — sort it in India before flying, because it is not available on arrival. For trips beyond about three months you would need to look at a local licence instead.
The same-side advantage — and where it ends
Driving on the left feels natural, but Australian roads are nothing like Indian ones in pace and discipline. Lanes are kept, indicators are used, and the open highway is empty and fast rather than crowded. The mental shift is from improvisation to rules: lane changes are deliberate, speed is constant, and gaps are respected.
Speed and the camera network
Motorways cap at 110 km/h, rural roads at 100, towns at a strict 50 — and Australia backs these with fixed, mobile and average-speed cameras over long stretches. Ten over typically costs AUD 200-350, varying by state. Check what a given overage would cost on our speeding fine calculator rather than guessing.
Alcohol and the rural road
The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05 — numerically looser than India’s 0.03, but the enforcement is the opposite of relaxed: random breath testing stops are routine, day and night. The safe read is zero before driving. Out on the highway the hazards are distance and wildlife — kangaroos at dawn and dusk cause real crashes, so keep off open rural roads after dark where you can. Petrol is about $1.42/litre, cheapest at supermarket stations, and the emergency number is 000.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Indian licence holders can drive in Australia on a foreign licence for short stays, with an International Driving Permit recommended. Carry the IDP, your Indian licence and passport together; rental desks expect the set.
Both India and Australia drive on the left, so there is no side switch — one of the few corridors where that holds. Roundabouts and overtaking feel familiar from day one.
Australia's limit is 0.05 BAC, looser than India's 0.03 — but enforcement via random breath testing is far heavier, and penalties are severe. Treat it as no drinking before driving.
