Australia on a Canadian Licence — The Side Switch, 0.08 Drops to 0.05 & Camera Country
Canada
Australia
Canadian drivers in Australia switch from right- to left-hand traffic, the main adjustment. Your English-language licence means no IDP is strictly required, but the alcohol limit drops sharply from Canada's 0.08 to 0.05, cameras are everywhere, and outback wildlife is a genuine hazard.
For a Canadian driver, Australia gets one thing out of the way easily and adds two you should not underestimate. The easy part is paperwork: a Canadian licence is in English, so it is accepted for visitors without an International Driving Permit. Carrying one does no harm, but you are not obliged to, and your licence is valid for up to 3 months as a visitor. You can confirm your exact status with the Driving Permit Checker.
The first real adjustment is the side of the road. Canada drives on the right; Australia drives on the left, and every ingrained habit — glancing right first, holding the right lane, taking a roundabout clockwise — now works against you. Practise in a quiet car park before you join traffic, and stay alert at junctions and when overtaking, especially once you tire and reflexes take over.
The second is alcohol, and this one genuinely trips Canadians up. Canada’s limit is 0.08; Australia’s is 0.05, noticeably lower, and the comfortable margin you may apply at home simply isn’t there. Treat it as close to zero before driving — enforcement is strict and the consequences serious. On speed, motorways cap at 110 km/h, towns at 50, rural roads at 100, and the cameras are the headline: fixed and mobile units are widespread, tolerances are tight, and a fine runs AUD 200-350 (≈ €120-210) depending on the state. You can model one with the Speeding Fine Calculator.
Then there is the outback. Distances are vast, and kangaroos and livestock on the road are a real danger at dawn, dusk and after dark — many locals avoid rural roads at night for exactly that reason. The emergency number is 000. Equipment rules are minimal, but basic safety gear and plenty of water are sensible on remote legs, and fuel runs around $1.42/litre.
The full state-by-state picture is on our Australia driving guide. The licence is the easy bit; the things to respect are the left-hand side, the lower alcohol limit and the wildlife.

Because a Canadian licence is in English, it is accepted for visitors without an IDP — though carrying one does no harm. Your licence is valid for up to 3 months, and rules vary by state.
Australia's 0.05 limit is well below Canada's 0.08, so the margin you may be used to is gone — treat it as close to zero. Speed cameras are widespread, and fines run AUD 200-350 (about EUR 120-210) by state.
