For an American the set-up is about as straightforward as driving abroad gets — same side of the road, a licence that simply works, and short distances.

The verdict for US licence holders

You can drive in Aruba on your US licence, and an IDP is recommended rather than mandatory — handy at the rental counter and as a translated fallback, since Aruba is officially Dutch-speaking alongside the local Papiamento. Bring your US licence, an IDP if you have one, and your passport. There is no conversion to worry about for a normal visit.

No side switch — the easy part

Aruba drives on the right, exactly like the US. That removes the usual abroad hazard entirely; the steering wheel and the road are on the sides you expect, so you can focus on navigation rather than fighting instinct.

Where the real difference is

Two things deserve attention. First, alcohol: the limit is 0.05 BAC, below the 0.08 most Americans assume, so the after-dinner margin you might take at home does not exist here. Second, the roads themselves — the main routes between Oranjestad, the airport and the hotel strip are fine, but head toward the national park or the north coast and surfaces turn rough, unpaved and unsigned, with stretches that really need higher-clearance vehicles. Posted limits are not well documented away from the main roads, so drive to the conditions rather than a number, and avoid the dirt tracks in a standard car after rain.
