Armenia on a US Licence 2026: The IDP Is Not Optional

Monasteries tucked into side valleys, Lake Sevan and the high road south to Tatev are the reasons to hire a car in Armenia. For an American the side of the road is already familiar. The paperwork is what needs work before you fly.

Licence plus permit

Do not plan on the US licence alone. Global Affairs Canada tells its travellers they need an international driving permit or an Armenian driver’s licence, and the UK Foreign Office says visitors must carry the permit and the home licence. Neither leaves room for a foreign licence on its own.

There is a catch for Americans. The United States is a party to the 1949 Geneva Convention, so US-issued permits follow the 1949 model. Armenia joined only the 1968 Vienna Convention, in 2005, and the UK advice asks for the 1968 permit specifically. Carry the US licence, the IDP and your passport, and ask the hire company in writing before you pay whether it accepts a US permit. Same side, different style

Armenia drives on the right, as the US does, so roundabouts and junctions work the way you expect. The UK warns that some drivers are reckless and ignore traffic laws; expect fast lane changes in Yerevan and drive defensively.

Alcohol, roads and night driving

Article 126 of Armenia’s Code of Administrative Offences sets the threshold at 0.2 grams per litre of blood (0.02%) or 0.1 mg per litre of breath, a quarter of the 0.08% used in every US state but Utah. Canada’s advice describes it as zero tolerance, and penalties start with a fine and five licence points. Keep driving days dry.

Canada says roads in Yerevan and on main routes have improved, but rural roads suffer from poor lighting, faded markings, large potholes, unpaved sections, missing shoulders and weak snow clearing. The UK adds that roads are at their worst from November to February and recommends avoiding driving outside towns after dark. Plan long legs in daylight.
