Can an Indian Drive in Armenia? — Yes, With an IDP and a Side Switch

Monasteries strung along mountain valleys, Lake Sevan and the road south through Vayots Dzor are the reasons to hire a car in Armenia rather than rely on tours. For an Indian driver the trip comes down to one document, one habit and one firm rule about alcohol.

The permit is not optional

Do not plan on the Indian licence alone. Global Affairs Canada tells its travellers that they need an international driving permit or an Armenian driver’s licence, and the UK Foreign Office says British visitors must carry both the permit and their home licence. Treat the same as true for you: carry the Indian licence, the IDP and your passport together.

There is a wrinkle worth sorting before you pay a deposit. India is a party to the 1949 Geneva Convention, so the permit your RTO issues follows the 1949 format, while Armenia joined only the 1968 Vienna Convention (in 2005). The UK advice names the 1968 permit specifically. Ask the hire company in writing whether it accepts an Indian 1949 permit; a written yes saves an argument at the desk. India drives on the left and Armenia on the right. Everything automatic for you, from the first look at a junction to the way a roundabout flows, is reversed. Mistakes cluster in the moments you are not concentrating: pulling out of a fuel station, a quiet turn, a glance in the mirror. Spend the first hour somewhere calm rather than in central Yerevan.

No alcohol at all

Canada’s travel advice describes zero tolerance for drinking and driving in Armenia and warns that a conviction can lead to jail. The legal line, in Article 126 of the Code of Administrative Offences, is 0.2 grams of alcohol per litre of blood (0.02%), against India’s 30 mg per 100 ml (0.03%). Keep driving days dry. Car insurance is compulsory, so check that a hire car’s cover is in the paperwork.

Mountain roads and night driving

The UK advice calls road surfaces poor, worst in the cold months from November to February, and recommends avoiding driving outside towns after dark because of the condition of the roads and the lack of lighting. Canada adds that drivers often speed and change lanes without warning. Plan long legs for daylight and keep a charged phone in the car.
