Polish Drivers in Argentina 2026: IDP Rules and Zero Alcohol

Polish drivers come from a country with one of Europe’s strictest alcohol lines and a fast-improving motorway network. Argentina tightens the first even further and stretches the second to a scale that needs respect.

Can a Polish licence holder drive in Argentina? Yes, with an International Driving Permit. Your Polish licence is not accepted on its own at the rental counter. Argentina wants the IDP carried beside it, and a hire firm can refuse the keys without one. Sort it through PZM or a Polish post office before you travel — it cannot be issued once you are in Argentina. The documents you carry are the IDP, your Polish licence and your passport.

The clearest difference from home is alcohol. Poland enforces 0.2 per mille, a near-zero line where a single drink can put you over. Argentina has no line at all: under Law 27.714 (May 2023) any alcohol in the blood is an offence. Each province then sets its own penalties. Nothing before driving is not just the safe choice here, it is the law.

The other adjustment is geography rather than law. Argentina drives on the right, exactly as Poland does, so there is no side to relearn. But the country is immense. Buenos Aires is dense, quick and assertive, demanding decisive moves at junctions. Outside the capital the highways are good but single-carriageway and long, with large gaps between fuel and services; Patagonia in the far south is genuinely remote, so plan your range and carry water. Town limits drop to a strict 40 km/h, the open road runs at 110 and motorways at 130.

A modest speeding fine is around ARS 10,000–30,000 (about €10–30), varying by province. Petrol sits near $0.88/litre; the emergency number is 911.
