Driving in Argentina on an Irish Licence — IDP Required & the Side Flips

Argentina is a country of distances — Buenos Aires to the Patagonian south is further than Dublin to the Sahara — and renting a car opens up roads the buses never reach. For an Irish driver, two things need settling before the romance of the open road begins.

The first is a document many EU drivers wrongly assume they can skip. Argentina requires an International Driving Permit for foreign visitors, and your Irish licence on its own is not sufficient — the EU exemption that works across Europe does not apply here. The second is the side of the road. Ireland drives on the left, Argentina on the right. Everything reverses, and the worst place to discover that is central Buenos Aires, where traffic is fast, lane markings are treated as suggestions, and lane-splitting motorcyclists appear from nowhere. Pick the car up somewhere calmer if you can, give yourself a deliberate first hour, and stay alert at every junction and roundabout (now turning anticlockwise) until the new geometry feels natural. Then the country splits in two. In and around the cities, the driving is intense and assertive. Head south or west and it inverts entirely — Patagonia and the Ruta 40 mean hundreds of kilometres between fuel stops, long unpaved (ripio) gravel stretches, fierce crosswinds and almost no mobile signal. Fill the tank whenever you pass a station rather than when you need to, and carry water and warm layers.

Speeds are signed in km/h: 40 in town, 110 on rural routes, 130 on motorways. The alcohol limit is zero nationwide under Law 27.714 (May 2023), well below the 50 mg allowed in Ireland.
