The temporary local permit comes first

Your US licence is recognised as the basis for driving, but you cannot drive on it alone: Antigua and Barbuda requires a temporary local driving permit. The car-hire company normally issues it when you collect the vehicle, taking your US licence as proof of entitlement, and it is valid for a set short period that covers a typical holiday. The thing to fix in your mind is that this local permit — not an International Driving Permit — is what makes you legal, so budget the few minutes and the small fee at pickup. Driving on the left

The islands drive on the left, the reverse of home. It is a gentler place to relearn than a mainland city — traffic is light and speeds are low — but the reflex still catches you pulling out of resorts, at the roundabouts near St John’s, and on unmarked rural lanes. Keep left, take junctions slowly, and the instinct flips within an hour or two.

Roads, alcohol and the practicalities

Expect narrow, lightly signed roads with potholes, speed bumps through villages and the odd animal on the carriageway; drive to the conditions rather than to a posted number. The drink-drive limit is 0.08, but on roads like these the honest rule is none at all before driving. The emergency number is 911.
