Anguilla is small and flat, and a hire car is the easiest way to reach its quieter beaches. For an Indian visitor the road side is familiar. What needs planning is one extra document bought on the island.
The licence verdict: buy the local permit
Your Indian licence gets you the permit; it does not replace it. Visitors buy a temporary local driving permit by showing their home licence. The UK government’s travel advice describes it as a US$25 local licence sold by rental companies and valid for three months, so in practice the hire desk handles it when you collect the car. Carry the Indian licence and the local permit together, with your passport.
An International Driving Permit does not help here. Global Affairs Canada states plainly that the international driving permit is not recognised in Anguilla, so there is no need to get one from your RTO for this trip. The minimum driving age is 18.
No side switch, one quirk
Like India, Anguilla drives on the left, so junction and roundabout habits carry straight over. The quirk is the car: the UK government notes that some hire cars are left-hand drive. Sitting on the kerb side cuts your view past the vehicle ahead, so overtake rarely and pull out of side roads slowly.
On the road
Roads are short and speeds stay low. Take junctions carefully and watch for pedestrians near the beaches. The emergency number is 911.
