Can an American licence holder drive in Angola?

Yes. Your US licence lets you drive in Angola, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry with it — not always demanded by law, but the document rental desks and roadside police in Angola expect to see beside your passport. Get the IDP from AAA before you travel; it is not available once you land. The phrase to search is simple — “driving in Angola” on an “American licence” — and the answer is yes, with the IDP as your back-up.

No side switch — the rare easy part

India, the UK and much of southern Africa would have you relearning roundabouts. Angola does not. It drives on the right, the same as the United States, so junctions, overtaking and that reflex glance all work the way your muscle memory expects. That is genuinely the easiest corridor a US driver can pick in this region, and it lets you spend your attention on road surface instead of road side.

The 0.06 limit and the road itself

Angola sets blood alcohol at 0.06, under the 0.08 you may be used to at home. There is no comfortable margin — if you are driving, don’t drink. Beyond the paperwork, the real adjustment is condition: away from the main routes out of Luanda, surfaces break up, lane markings vanish, and you will meet unlit vehicles and pedestrians after dark. Drive to the road, not to the sign. Posted limits run 50 km/h in town, 80 rural and 100 on the better highways, but treat those as ceilings you rarely reach safely.

Fuel is exceptionally cheap — around $0.28 a litre thanks to subsidies — so range is the least of your worries. The general emergency number is 112. Carry your IDP, US licence and passport together, keep cash for tolls and roadside payments, and download offline maps before you leave coverage.
