Angola is a big, oil-rich country where a car opens up far more than the cities, and for an Indian visitor the licence side is straightforward enough. The two things to actually prepare for are the change of road side and the way driving here differs from the orderly trip the paperwork implies.

The verdict for Indian licence holders

You can drive in Angola on your Indian licence with an International Driving Permit carried alongside it. The big one: India drives left, Angola drives right

This is the single adjustment most likely to trip you up. India drives on the left; Angola drives on the right, so roundabouts flow the opposite way and your reflex glance at a junction will be aimed at the wrong lane. The danger window is your first day — pulling out of a forecourt or joining a busy Luanda junction. Take the first hour somewhere quiet and be deliberate at every turn until right-hand traffic stops feeling backwards.

Almost-free fuel, but that is not the headline

One thing that genuinely surprises visitors: petrol in Angola is among the cheapest anywhere, roughly €0.28/litre thanks to state subsidies. That makes long distances cheap to cover — but distance is the trap, not the saving.
