Can an Indian Drive in Andorra? — IDP Recommended + Mountain-Pass Reality
India
Andorra
An Indian licence holder can drive in Andorra with an International Driving Permit recommended alongside the licence. The paperwork is the easy part — Andorra is all mountain roads, so the real planning is the side switch (India left, Andorra right), winter chains in the cold months, and a 0.05 alcohol limit.
Andorra is a tiny country wedged high in the Pyrenees, and almost everyone arrives by car. For an Indian visitor the licence question is simple — but the terrain, not the paperwork, is what you actually plan for.
Can you drive on an Indian licence?
Yes. An Indian licence holder can drive in Andorra, and an International Driving Permit is recommended alongside it. Andorra is not an EU member, so don’t assume EU licence-recognition rules apply — carry the IDP, your Indian licence and your passport, and sort the IDP in India before you fly. At rental desks the IDP smooths things along, since an Indian licence is not in a script local staff read at a glance.
The side switch, on the worst possible roads to learn it
India drives on the left; Andorra drives on the right. The catch is that Andorra has no easy roads to practise on — it is mountain passes, hairpins and steep town streets from the moment you arrive. That makes the reflex adjustment harder than in a flat country, because you are turning, yielding and judging oncoming traffic constantly. Take it slowly, use low gears on the descents to save your brakes, and give yourself the first stretch on the quieter approaches before tackling Andorra la Vella’s traffic.
Winter changes everything
Because the whole country sits at altitude, winter chains or winter tyres are routinely needed in the cold months, and duty-free shopping traffic clogs the main roads on weekends year-round. If you are visiting between roughly November and April, treat snow equipment as part of the plan, not an afterthought, and check the pass conditions before you set out.
Speeds and alcohol
Limits are 50 km/h in towns and up to 90 km/h on the open mountain roads — there are no motorways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05, and on roads this twisty the sensible choice is to not drink before driving at all. Andorra does not publish a standard fixed fine figure for speeding.

0.05 blood-alcohol, stricter than India's 0.03 in practice once you account for how it is enforced. The safest rule on twisty mountain roads is none at all.
