Can a British Driver Use Their Licence in Algeria? — IDP + a Side Switch

Algeria is vast, dramatic and still off most tourist itineraries — Roman ruins, the Saharan oases of the south, and a long Mediterranean coast road. Self-driving is possible but demands preparation, and for a Briton there are two specific shifts to get right before you turn a wheel.

The verdict for British licence holders

You can drive in Algeria on your UK licence when you carry an International Driving Permit with it. The IDP is the translated document Algerian police and rental firms expect to see alongside your passport, so treat it as essential rather than optional. The side switch: left to right

Algeria drives on the right, the opposite of home, so the first adjustment is which side you belong on. The danger window is your first day — joining a roundabout that flows the other way, pulling out of a fuel station, or that reflex glance in the wrong direction. Take your opening hour on a quiet road rather than in Algiers traffic, and stay deliberate at every junction until keeping right feels automatic.

A near-zero alcohol limit

The second shift is alcohol. Algeria’s limit is 0.01 — effectively zero, and far below the UK’s 0.08. With alcohol broadly restricted across the country anyway, there is simply no margin: any reading while driving brings serious penalties. If you are driving, drink nothing at all.

Speeds, fuel and the roads
