Quick Answer

An Indian licence holder can drive in Algeria with an International Driving Permit recommended alongside it. Two things actually catch Indian drivers out: switching from left-hand to right-hand traffic, and a near-zero 0.01 alcohol limit that is far stricter than India's 0.03 — treat it as a total ban.

Algeria is vast — the largest country in Africa — and a car opens up distances buses cannot cover. For an Indian visitor the licence is manageable; two specific habits are not, and neither is the paperwork.

Can an Indian licence holder drive in Algeria?

Yes. Your Indian licence is accepted for a visit, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry alongside it. Algeria runs in Arabic and French, so an officer at one of the country’s many police checkpoints may not be able to read an Indian licence directly — the IDP supplies a standard translation and speeds things along. Keep the IDP, your Indian licence and passport together, and arrange the permit in India before you travel.

The side switch is the first thing to get right

India drives on the left; Algeria drives on the right. That reversal is the main hazard, and the danger window is your first day — pulling out of a junction, joining a roundabout that now flows the other way, or glancing the wrong direction by reflex. Take your opening hour somewhere quiet rather than in Algiers traffic, which is busy and assertive, and stay deliberate at every turn until the new side stops feeling backwards.

A near-zero alcohol limit

Algeria’s blood-alcohol limit is 0.01 — effectively zero, and far below India’s 0.03. There is no “one drink” margin here, and with alcohol tightly restricted across much of the country anyway, the only workable rule is none at all before driving. Penalties are serious and enforcement at checkpoints is routine.

Speeds, fuel and the open road

Limits are 50 km/h in towns, 80 on rural roads and 120 on the motorway. The northern motorways are decent, but head south and roads become long, remote desert stretches where fuel, water and phone signal all thin out — never set off across them without a full tank and supplies. Petrol is famously cheap at around $0.32 a litre, a rare bonus. The emergency number is 112.

Yes, with an International Driving Permit recommended to carry beside it. Arabic and French dominate, so an IDP gives police a readable translation of your Indian licence — keep it with your passport.

Check if your licence is valid

Algeria drives on the right, the opposite of India. The side switch is the single biggest adjustment, and the first day behind the wheel is when it bites.

Algeria's blood-alcohol limit is a near-zero 0.01 — effectively a total ban, and well below India's 0.03. With alcohol restricted across the country anyway, the only safe rule is none before driving.
